The south of the Serengeti was crying out for a top permanent lodge and now it has one. With an amazing location above a rocky gorge and eight classically styled tented rooms, Mwiba is a top luxury lodge.

this amazing property not only has a stunning riverside location, but also boasts 51,000 acres of wildlife reserve which is completely private and just for you. The game here is excellent all year round due to 33 freshwater springs which are situated on the property. Every room and mess area is designed to maximize beautiful views. Mwiba is close to the Ngorongoron Crater which makes it the ideal Serengeti choice for those that don’t want to travel for many hours in vehicles or on planes.

General Info:

The camp has been designed and built with relaxation in mind. Unlike so many of its supposedly high-end competitors, Mwiba does not attack the senses with bright reds and greens. The tents are tastefully understated with a woody-beige colour scheme throughout. The standalone baths, all with a great view, are the highlight. Enormous glass panelled doors lead out onto private wooden decking, again enjoying huge views across the trees and beyond.

The main area is an enormous wooden deck sandwiched between the enormous boulders that form the centrepiece of the lodge. Although open-sided, the area is covered by a beautiful Makuti thatched roof. The infinity pool sits just in front of this area and enjoys a similar view across the rocky gorge below.

As one would expect from a lodge of this quality and price, the food is varied and excellent, a blend of African and European.

Luxury Suites:

Eight gorgeously appointed suites are placed in perfect seclusion on timber platforms overlooking the splendid views of the gorge and the plains beyond. The vast interiors feature a pale palette of cream and tan, incorporating a lounge and bedroom area leading out onto a spacious private verandah.

King-sized beds swathed in netting are cooled by fans and the Evening Breeze air-conditioning system at night, and the adjoining en suite bathrooms feature indoor and outdoor showers, as well as enormous bathtubs with spectacular views.

The last leg of your journey to Mwiba Lodge, a new tented camp in a luxurious league of its own, is a 40-minute flight that lifts you over Tanzania's Serengeti Plain until the Great Rift Valley opens on to a sky-high plateau like something out of Conan Doyle's The Lost World.

The Northern Air charter plane from the international gateway city of Arusha lands on a grassy strip dramatically close to the plateau's edge, where a waiting Land Cruiser whisks you off to the lodge.

The nature of a private concession like Mwiba is that you have absolute freedom to go off-road, day or night, and encounter only wildlife, not a dozen other safari vehicles. One evening game drive began with cocktails to accompany the sunset, segueing to a full-moon night tour that yielded a dozen big-eyed bush babies in the trees, giraffes, a curious hyena, a chameleon and a fun if fruitless effort to track a leopard. And that's just some local color.
