Green Hills of Africa.

Follow in the footsteps of Hemingway

Green Hills of Africa

Green Hills of Africa is Ernest Hemingway's lyrical journal of a month on safari in the great game countries of East Africa. It is an examination of the lure of the hunt and an impassioned portrait of the glory of the African landscape and of the beauty of its wilderness.

"Verdant rolling hills of endless green, great blue skies and spectacular landscape views are what the Chyulu Hills provide to nature lovers."

The legendary American writer Ernest Miller Hemingway (1899-1961) was probably the one introducing the Swahili word "safari" to the English language. Hemingway traveled in East Africa two times in his life and the experiences gave him material for several short stories and novels.

The remarkable personality of Hemingway also contributed to the image of the Great White Hunter. He was probably not the greatest of hunters but he had a true love affair with the hunting experience, the nature and wildlife of Africa. Without learning the kiswahili language he also managed to have some understanding of the Kenyans, which was far from common at that time.

"In a country that has changed so much, this is perhaps the closest you can come to a patch of true wilderness. This is the wild and untouched land that perhaps more than anywhere else in Kenya still evokes the golden age of safari."

The Chyulu Hills are perhaps one of the most beautiful – and youngest – ranges on earth. In his fitting ode to the Chyulu hills, American author Ernest Hemingway wrote in his book, “Green Hills of Africa,” about his lengthy expeditions tracking the huge herds of kudu antelope, recognizable by their telltale striped hide, that roamed these hills.

Unspoiled Africa.
